Insurance

Generally, when you apply for insurance, you are obliged under law to disclose all relevant information. In most cases this will include living with HIV, or being at risk of exposure to HIV. Failure to disclose where you are obliged to disclose may mean that you are not covered by the insurance policy.

Deciding whether or not to disclose your HIV status to your insurer can be difficult and complicated. If you have any further questions you should contact HALC for an appointment.

Health Insurance
For most health insurance funds you will not be required to disclose your HIV status when you apply. This is because most funds will not cover any pre-existing conditions (including HIV) for the first 12 months or 2 years of the policy. After that time any illness arising from HIV should be covered.

Life and Disability Insurance
For life and disability insurance you are required by law to disclose your HIV status or whether you fall within a risk category for exposure to HIV. Failure to do so may mean that the insurer can decline to cover you for any HIV-related claims. Many policies will not cover HIV-related claims and in our experience it is very difficult for people living with HIV/AIDS to obtain life and disability insurance.

Travel Insurance
Most travel insurance policies will not cover HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases, and generally you do not have to disclose your HIV status unless you want to seek cover for your HIV. For further information you should contact HALC.
